Title

Nyamata: Sexual Violence

After visiting the sanctuary, the tour descends into a memorial chamber dug into the sanctuary's floor. Built after the genocide, the chamber holds shelves displaying skulls. Below these shelves rests a single coffin. In the coffin lies a women who was raped and violated repeatedly during the massacre. Separated from the rest of the skeletons, she represents the sexual violence committed against women during the genocide. But at the same time this presentation presents an ethical question to the visitor. Standing above the coffin, the visitor becomes a voyeur to the horrifying sexual violence inflicted both to the individual and collectively to Rwandan women.
