Murambi

The Murambi memorial can be found in the Gikongoro province in southern Rwanda. Gikongoro Tutsi fled to an underconstructed technical school located on a hilltop. After isolating them on the hill, the Hutu central authorities and interahamwe ambushed the refugees on April 21, 1994. Upwards of 40,000 to 50,000 Tutsi perished. In 1995, survivors preserved the bodies of over 800 victims through limestone preservation methods. These bodies are on display in the rooms of the unfinished techical school. The memorial also includes a museum exhibition designed by Aegis Trust and CNLG.
