Located in the eastern Kibungo province near the Tanzanian border, Nyarubuye is the third national church memorial in Rwanda. At Nyarubuye most Tutsi died outside the church, meaning that the church remains a place of worship up to the present day. In 1994 the mayor of the region told all Tutsi to hide in the church. He promised them safety, but he simultaneously organized an assault with the interahamwe. Thousands upon thousands of Tutsi died. Bones, clothes, and weapons are now displayed in a long hallway in the former Sunday school next to the church. A field of mass graves has also been built across from the church.
